about

This song was inspired by the fictional "Alpha Couple" created by John Darnielle, who is a big songsmith influence of mine (KM). The couple are alcoholics who have become so dependent on one another that neither is able to walk away from the relationship as it crashes and burns. Erik and I added some personal touches to the lyrics from real life failed relationships.

Fun fact: this is the first song that Erik wrote lyrics for. I (KM) couldn't come up with a vocal line I liked for the chorus and Erik asked to take a crack at it.

lyrics

I hope the lives that we're living
Spin so far out of control
That we forsake one another
And claw our way out of this hole
But the days are getting shorter
And we sink a little more
We've built ourselves up a prison
And chained one another to the floors
With no locks on the doors

I don't really want it
And you can't take it
It's over
Just listen to me
When I say I won't even remember your name
When I'm walking out your door
Walking out your door
Walking out your door

I'm on the verge of collapsing
When I finally wrestle free
But you you've got your meathooks inside me
And I can feel my dependency
But I can see the life just beyond me
And I relish in the sound
Of the wind rushing my face
And my feet pounding hard against the ground
And if I get lost I hope I'm no found
If I get lost I hope I'm not found

I don't really want it
And you can't take it
It's over
Just listen to me
When I say I won't even remember your name
When I'm walking out your door
Walking out your door
Walking out your door

I feel your breath hot behind me
And for a moment I have to stop
But I'm just far too pissed off
To let that matter drop
I've seen your lies in the shadows
I'm tired of living in the shade
Someday someone somewhere
Is gonna teach you how to be afraid
And when that comes
When that day comes
I'm bringing razor blades

I don't really want it
And you can't take it
It's over
Just listen to me
When I say I won't even remember your name
When I'm walking out your
Walking out your
Walking out your door
